Eighteen Windows, One Witness

A monumental desert figure becomes a network of moving images. Eighteen painted screens carry original generative animations while the portrait remains still and watchful: one body housing an active digital consciousness.

The first piece. A silver headed figure with glowing pink eyes sits over a desert town built into its own chest. A crown of small monitors circles its head, and the town below is full of screens. Every screen now plays its own channel.

I wrote eighteen original Three.js animations for this piece: Waveform, Lissajous, Contours, Radar, Silver Star Lattice, Golden Swarm, Cyan Vortex, Rose Rosette, Crystal Wireframe, Violet Interference, Solar Iris, Signal Columns, Orbital Glyph, Digital Rain, Copper Tunnel, Pearl Ripples, Binary Sun, and Woven Field. Each one was rendered in the browser and pinned into the painted screens in After Effects, corner by corner.

This is where the method began. Write the art in code, then let the portrait carry it. The figure is a receiver in the desert, picking up every signal at once.

Saint Plastic of the High Desert

The collection’s namesake joins coded screen art, desert atmosphere and a rotating green plastic cactus. A familiar roadside object becomes an artificial totem: part souvenir, part signal and part survivor.

The piece that named the show. A white figure with a lit up windowed skull stands above a desert machine town. Copper spheres sit in the corners. In the middle of it all is a glossy green plastic cactus with rounded arms and a red sphere.

A plastic cactus is the joke and the point. Real art, fake cactus. It is a desert symbol made from a factory material, the same way this portrait is a desert scene made from code.

Four original Three.js artworks play in the screens: Genetic Bloom, Glyph Habitat, Chromosome Garden, and Neural Fossil. The cactus was built in code and turns slowly with a pulse of light across its plastic shine. Soft Three.js particles drift through the air like desert dust. Everything was set in place in After Effects. The face, the church, the land, and the foil border stay still.

The Last Broadcast from New Star

A silver-helmeted figure transmits one final signal through green monitors, sacred geometry and desert light. A gold wire form turns beneath glass while the plastic cactus returns beside the New Star Grocery Art Museum.

The piece that ties the series together. A figure in a silver helmet ringed with small green monitors, with a glass dome on top and a chest full of rainbow bubbles. Behind her is the desert horizon, and in the plaza below stands the New Star Grocery Art Museum.

This piece uses the most code of the five. Ten head screens each run their own Three.js shader art. A p5.js organic mesh moves inside the ear. The painted wire shape in the dome was replaced with a turning gold icosahedron built in Three.js. A gold disc of sacred geometry turns in the chest. Six Marfa lights dart in the low sky. A glint runs down the light streaks from the white car toward the plaza.

And the plastic cactus from piece 2 is back, standing on the sidewalk just right of the New Star door. The signal went out across the desert, and it came home.

The Oracle Who Dreams Backward

A crowned oracle operates through opposing cycles. Counter-rotating rings, painted rosettes, coded screens, darting Marfa lights and billowing dust create an ancient machine reading time in reverse.

An oracle with screens in her head and her heart. A great crown of rings and symbols turns behind her, and the rings run in opposite directions, so time looks like it is winding back.

Five new Three.js artworks play in the head screens: Prismatic Fresco, Electric Heartseed, Chromatic Rosette, Constellation Matrix, and Triwave Ribbon. The chest screens carry Signal Tiles, Copper Code, Oracle Window, Night Architecture, and Desert Relay. Four Marfa lights were lifted from the original image and now dart across the sky. Two layers of soft Three.js dust billow along the ground. The four painted corner rosettes spin in alternating directions.

Marfa has the lights nobody can explain. This piece gives them an oracle to read them.

Monument for a Future Mirage

Architecture and figure merge into one illuminated monument. Painted forms and structural details move with a slow ceremonial rhythm, allowing light to travel through the image like energy crossing a desert shrine.

A giant pale figure rises from the desert floor with a whole city in her crown. Mesas stretch out on both sides. String lights glow across the plaza at her feet.

Here I went past the screens. I pulled light out of the original image itself and set it moving. The flower of life on her chest splits into two rings that turn against each other. A halo of sacred geometry revolves behind her head. Blue wireframe waves roll through the mesas. The four corner rosettes turn like clockwork. Eleven monitors at her base each show a different sacred geometry build made in Three.js. One painted bird was replaced with a coded bird that flies a slow loop. The two perched birds were left alone.

She is a monument in a town known for monuments to space and light. She does not move. Her light does.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Marfa is a small town in the high desert of West Texas. It is known for minimal art, open sky, red mesas, and the Marfa lights, the glowing orbs people have watched over the desert for more than a century. These portraits come out of that place. Each one is a monumental figure built from desert, architecture, and machinery, with the West Texas horizon behind it.

Each portrait starts as a still image. Then I bring it to life with code. I write original animations in Three.js and p5.js, render them frame by frame, and set them into the screens, halos, and lights of the portrait in After Effects. Nothing is painted over. The face and the architecture stay still. Only light, geometry, and the screens move.

Every piece runs exactly 1 minute 11 seconds. 1:11 is the number of the series.

Each piece also comes as a physical print. Point a phone at the print and it comes alive in augmented reality. An NFC chip is embedded in the print, so a tap opens the animated work.
